Although the semester ended abruptly, we still had a chance to recognize our President, Chinoia Weir and Vice President, Brice Sewell, who were celebrated by what would have been Inquiring Minds 2020 and the 2020 Research, Creativity and Innovation Forum (RCIF). The Phi Mu Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta had another remarkable term during the Fall 2018 Semester! “A Novel Discourse” was one event included in the successful One Book, One U series, which facilitated a semester-long dialogue of Make Your Home Among Strangers and topics related to the novel. We kindly thank them for recognizing Sigma Tau Delta with this generous Award. I wish everyone a very happy holidays and look forward to an amazing Spring semester. We hosted a moderated discussion with the Haitian student organization known as Planet Kreyol, highlighting the experiences of Danticat and her family in her memoir, and the topics of war, immigration and death that took prominence in the book. This collaborated event was a “Banned Books Week Display” that gave students and faculty the opportunity to view a collection of a hundred of the most popular and renown works that were banned based on religion, satanism/occult, homosexuality, sexual content & nudity, offensive language, racism, politics & Marxism, children, drugs/ alcohol, and violence. In June 2019, Delta Tau Delta's headquarters revoked the Miami University chapter's charter. It was our Chapter’s honor to work in tandem with the English Department to facilitate a Livistona saribus Palm Tree planting in the UM Palmetum in loving memory of UM English Professor Robert Healy. The Service enabled us all to share our very fond memories of Professor Healy and dedicate the lovely Palm. We started the week off with a Banned Books Movie Night, where attendees were shown the movie Monte Python’s Life of Brian, which has been challenged and banned in many countries for its Biblical satire. Together, we have realized our goals envisioned for our organization, and I am greatly appreciative of your enthusiasm and drive. It was further our privilege collaborating with the UM Rathskeller Advisory Board to host the ‘Stuff-a-Wizard’ event at the Rathskeller in October. After the discussion portion of our event, we held a reception where students were able to get free homemade Haitian food and get their free copies of the memoir signed.
